There are a lot of games that I do wish were running better on the Steam Deck. I understand that there are just some games that require too much power, but I can still dream. However, there have been some great modders who have taken up the responsibility to get these games running better on the go. One of those is ECLIPSE, and I was recently quite impressed with what he did with Death Stranding 2 before the optimization patches. And it looks like he has done it again with Samson.

Not long ago, I reviewed Samson, and I found the experience on the Steam Deck to be quite awful. It almost never got above 30 FPS, and trying to use any external tools like lossless scaling only added input latency, and still felt bad. I honestly thought the game would never be playable on the Deck, but I am surprised and happy to say my thoughts have changed thanks to ECLIPSE.
Yesterday, ECLIPSE released a mod to target improving performance with Samson, and it really does the job well. The mod itself can be found directly on their Telegram channel, and installation is as easy as replacing one .pak file. If you do this, I recommend creating a backup of the file just in case. He also provides some recommended settings, which I decided to use for the test. There weren’t many changes from the default, lowest settings, other than using TSR upscaling at Ultra Quality.

And honestly, it’s a huge difference. The game is now hovering above or at 30 FPS throughout areas that were dropping down into the 10s before. Running around and fighting is now sticking to above 30 FPS, while driving around is now hovering around 30 FPS, with some minor drops to 26 to 28. It’s definitely a significant improvement over the game without the mod, which can see the framerate go down dramatically with some big stutters. Even with the slight framerate drops it with the mod, it feels so much smoother in general.
Visually, there aren’t really many changes that can be seen. I checked out the game and compared the modded and unmodded versions with the same settings recommended by ECLIPSE, and it’s pretty hard to tell them apart. The game still looks pretty sharp with lots of details showing, which is fantastic. There seem to be some slight lighting changes, but it ultimately looks very similar to each other.
Based on my experience so far, I would say using this mod makes the game significantly more playable on the Deck. There are still some drops here and there, especially when driving, but they are nowhere near as bad as they are without the mod. Despite my issues with the content, the game is surprisingly playable this way. I wouldn’t say it’s a game I would choose to play in general. I still have my thoughts on the actual content itself, but if you wanna play on the Deck, I would say this is the best way to do it.
Samson can be purchased on Steam for $24.99.
