The Steam Frame May Have a PSU-Less Model When It Goes On Sale

Ever since it was announced, I have been getting back into VR to get ready for the Steam Frame. I can’t wait to play games with it, especially since my VR library on Steam is massive. It appears that an announcement could be on its way, but until then, we can speculate on rumors based on what we find in the data. And today, we discovered that there could be a model of the Frame released without its PSU (Power Supply Unit).

Discovered by Chris Mizo (@MizoChris) on Twitter/X, it appears as though data on the backend for Steam mentions a PSU-less model of the Steam Frame. It shows some notifications and hardware details that specifically say BuyWithoutPSU or PSULessModel. And while I am very excited for this, I do believe coverage may be wrong about what it could mean.

A lot of people have been talking about how this could mean a cheaper model being available for people to purchase, but I don’t think that’s what it is. While it definitely could be, it does follow what the Steam Deck did to comply with EU regulations. In Europe, the Steam Deck can be purchased without a PSU. It doesn’t change the price, still costing the same as the same model with the PSU, but it is required by regulations in that country to be an option for people to purchase. On top of that, this is only available in Europe, so those and other countries don’t have the same option.

In my opinion, it follows a similar trend. I believe it is just an option for people, instead of a cheaper model that everyone can take part in. I would love to be wrong, since I have so many bricks to charge that I don’t need more, and I’d love to save some money, but realistically, this feels more like compliance, similar to the Deck, rather than going with a cheaper model altogether.

Time will tell exactly what the real answer is, but for now, that’s what it seems like to me.
