The Next ASUS ROG Ally May Use The Z2 Extreme APU

Of all the handhelds that compete with the Steam Deck, ASUS’ ROG Ally handhelds are usually the first to be compared. ASUS is one of the first major manufacturers to release a handheld, and has even become popular enough for Xbox to collaborate with them. Now, with Computex starting soon, it has been rumored that ASUS will be unveiling a new handheld. There’s been speculation about what it could be, but with recent developments, it’s looking more like a refresh of the current models.

Over on the RRA (National Radio Research Agency for South Korea) website, a license was granted to ASUS for a new handheld console PC. In the listing, we can see the certification number, which gives us the product code. And this product code indicates that the upcoming handheld will most likely be using a Z2 Extreme APU. Different letters in the product code usually have meaning, and in this case, there is an X in the code.

Looking at the past product codes for the ROG Ally devices, using VideoCardz's chart, it follows the pattern and has the same X in the same place as the ROG Xbox Ally X, which also uses a Z2 Extreme chip. And if we look at previous models, this letter changes depending on the APU used, like the L for the Z1 Extreme and Y for the Z2 A.

However, apart from the product code, there isn’t much else we can discern from this listing. There are no details about the screen size, or what makes this product refresh unique past its APU. All we know is that it’s using a Z2 Extreme chip, which indicates that this is a mid-gen refresh versus an entirely new generation.

It will be interesting to see how ASUS will justify this new product. Will they upgrade to an OLED screen? Will there be extra RAM? Will the price even be affordable in light of the current market? Time will tell, and hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long.
