The Lab Gets Steam Frame Controller Support

The first experiences I had with VR were when I got the HTC Vive: Valve’s own The Lab. This is a game that has a compilation of VR experiments to showcase what is possible with the device. It was one of the coolest things, and I still look back on it fondly. However, yesterday, The Lab got updated with support for the Steam Frame controllers, which means we’ll be able to continue trying it out on the upcoming VR headset from Valve.

Now, this in itself isn’t big news, but the implication means that support is ramping up. It’s very possible that there are going to be more VR games that start getting controller support for the Steam Frame’s knuckles, especially as dev kits seem to be out. It makes sense that this would happen; this is Valve’s own headset, so I would expect their own games to be supporting their hardware. However, this led to another revelation.

Over on Twitter/X, Brad Lynch (@sadlyitsbradley) commented in a quoted post that pointed out The Lab getting Steam Frame controller bindings. In the post, he notes that he has seen other VR titles getting specific standalone Steam Frame builds in the past couple of weeks. He mentions Arken Age, Racket Fury, The Room VR, and Sushi Ben getting their own builds. In the comments, he explained that this means they have specific ARM Android builds, with them using the Lepton compatibility layer.

While it all makes sense, I would consider it significant because dedicated builds popping up means that preparation is underway for the release of the Steam Frame. Hopefully, we will start seeing even more builds of our favorite VR games specifically tailored for the Frame, but I would consider this a good indicator that the headset is in the homestretch to release.
