The Steam Deck Is Shown Being Used in Ukraine's War Against Russia Prominently

Because of how the majority of people use the Steam Deck, it can be easy to forget that it's a full computer that can be used however a person wants. We have seen some crazy uses of it in the past, too, including how it is being used to control drones and robots, including photos of the Deck being used in war, but it seems it is way more widely used than I expected.

There was an article that was posted in the New York Times on July 2nd, written by Paul Mozur and Adam Satariano, that goes over how Ukraine is using AI to automate and enhance its arsenal. It's extremely interesting to see what they are implementing and how it enhances their limited capabilities. On top of this, the army is also experimenting and finding new ways to utilize the technology by using tools that were not created for this use, like PlayStation controllers. However, one such piece of tech that seems to be featured pretty prominently is the Steam Deck.

This video above is smack at the top of the article and features the Steam Deck being used in both of the left videos of the four. Both are seemingly being used to control a mounted gun, with the top left video actually shooting the gun. We also have an image seen further down that shows the Deck being used with the Roboneers gun turret, a special machine gun turret that is on top of a rolling ground drone. The Deck allows a person to pilot one of these at a distance, allowing unmanned or automated control that could help their lacking manpower.

While the article goes more into the use of AI from Ukraine and the ramifications that it could lead to for wars in the future, it is interesting seeing Steam Decks used like this. As people who mostly use it to play games, seeing other applications of it is intriguing and always an eye-opener. I highly recommend reading the article since it is interesting to see how far it is evolving, and I look forward to seeing how Steam Decks will be used in the future!
