We've all heard of Garry's Mod, but s&box may have passed you by. Released in 2024 as a preview build, the game finally got its full launch earlier this year, and now we've just had the Linux beta released for both the Editor and the Client.

Currently, it's only available via the s&box GitHub page, seemingly as a way to keep it in the hands of those knowledgeable enough to deal with bugs and potential crashes, with Facepunch (the developers) stating that once they feel it's stable enough, they will release it onto Steam for all Linux users to enjoy.

If you want to go ahead and try the Linux build for yourself, head on over to the forum thread for the Linux beta and follow the instructions.

Performance on Steam Deck is likely to vary hugely, given the nature of the game. Simple games appear to fare quite well, often hitting 60 FPS. But once you get into the more complex 3D games with foliage, etc., frame rates often plummet into the 20s. Hopefully, this Linux build of s&box can pave the way for improved performance on the handheld.
