Last month, there were two major games that came out, which were both quite difficult to play on the Steam Deck: Crimson Desert and Death Stranding 2. Still, there was a lot of hope that the latter would ultimately become playable, as we saw lots of improvements from patch 1.2 and the Eclipse mod. It felt like we were inching closer and closer, and today, we can officially say the game is now Steam Deck Verified.

Death Stranding 2 got the green checkmark today with patch 1.3. The page itself doesn’t have any specific fixes for the Steam Deck, but it does include performance, optimizations, fixes radar crashes, improves overall stability, and more. And with this Verified badge, Valve has noted that the game is functional with the default controller configuration, shows the correct controller icons, has legible text, and a default graphical quality setting that works well.
However, Valve’s Verified system isn’t always the most accurate, so I decided to test it out for myself. I was hopeful that it would run well, especially after the improvements from the previous patch, but I just had to see for myself.
So far, it doesn’t seem that performance has improved much. The early areas of the games still behave around the same; mostly sticking to 30 FPS and above, with some spots going below 30. The performance was already quite solid, but from the early areas, it doesn’t seem that the new patch has improved it much.
Still, I wanted to see if this was maybe just the opening area, and it actually got better later on. So, we went ahead and tested later parts of the game, and it actually feels a little bit worse. Throughout Australia, the frame rate would never go above 30 FPS, sticking around 25-27 FPS just standing still. And when there were more action-packed moments, wildfires, traveling across zip lines, and Timefall Zones, it would go below 20.
So, I would say it has improved much from the previous patch. I will give the team some credit; the improvements to performance in patch 1.2 were wonderful, but it still felt short of getting the Verified badge due to more drops later on, where it might not stick to 30 at all. However, there doesn’t seem to be any improvement with patch 1.3, and the issues further in the game definitely don’t make this a great experience on the go.
I would say this is another case of Valve giving the Verified badge a little too early. There does seem to be some improvements, and it’s very possible that they will deliver in future updates, but I would not consider this a Verified game.
Death Stranding 2 is available for $69.99 on Steam, but you can save some money by getting it on Fanatical for $62.99.

I mean... It's not ideal, but it's still amazing to be able to play this game on the go. What I do is, anything story related and more intense I play on PC, if it's just deliveries I don't mind doing on the Deck. I know many people don't have the option but it's still, being able to play this on the deck just shows how this game is optimized overall
