The Steam Frame release is around the corner, and I don’t think we’ll have to wait so much longer. I’m so excited to dive back into VR and play. Some of the games have been piling up in my library to prepare. However, there are some games that have mods that I very much want to try, and some of these are pretty incredible. I have previously covered a mod I found that can allow us to play Forza Horizon 6 in VR, but that one will be tough to run on the standalone Steam Frame. However, one of the most popular, easier games to run just got a VR mod, and I very much want to play it.
Announced by its creator, GingasVR, a VR mod for Stardew Valley is now out. This mod completely transformed the game, allowing us to play it in VR. There are physical interactions with motion controls for tools, customizable cutting for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person views, compatible VR menus, tons of options, and it is compatible with almost every modern expansion that has already been released. On top of that, you can seamlessly switch between the usual 2D view and 3D, which means you can technically play the game in 3D without a VR device.

If you want to try this for yourself, you can follow our guide on how to set it up on your Steam Deck.
While I haven't played the game in VR yet, I have tested it in 3D on the Steam Deck. It's a cool concept, but there are definitely some limitations to playing in 3D that would be fixed in VR. It's interesting seeing the new perspective, but we are locked to what movement and camera distance would be if we were playing normally in 2D. This means that movement feels weird, since moving the Joystick up will always move us north on the ground, not forward relative to where we are looking.
There's also a lot of model pop-in, so lots of the world will very obviously spawn in as we are walking. It's quite jarring and can ruin the experience a little bit. There's not much we can do about this one, but despite that, it's still quite intriguing to see the world of Stardew Valley like this. It's not a way I would recommend playing, but for a free mod to get a different perspective in some way, it's interesting.

Ultimately, this won't be a mod I use for my entire playthrough on the Steam Deck, but being able to switch between 2D and 3D at will is quite interesting. I like seeing my farm in a new way, and it feels like a no-brainer to try it since it doesn't cost a thing. Stardew Valley is an awesome game, and this just gives another reason to play. I have a feeling this will be even better in VR, and it will be one of the first games I try on the Steam Frame.
