Aside from Steam Input, one of my all-time favorite features of the Steam client is the workshop. Integrating mods for games inside the client is by far one of my favorite ways to experience games, especially when modding is a huge part of gaming on PC. The fact that it’s woven into the client makes utilizing them significantly easier than using a third-party website and manually installing them. However, a new beta was just released that should make it easier to use on the Steam Deck.

Earlier today, Valve pushed out and posted a new beta for browsing the Steam Workshop. This includes making the browsing page wider to allow more items and bigger preview images, faster and smarter filtering, and a new quick view to check out by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in the corner to explore screenshots, subscribe, and more without leaving the browsing page. All of this makes it significantly easier to look for new mods to use for your favorite games.

However, with the new complete rewrite of the browsing page, Valve has specifically noted that it is much better for the Steam Deck:

This new rewrite of the page allows us to better manage the responsiveness of the page for different contexts such as mobile, Steam Deck, and Big Picture mode.

Valve - Steam Workshop Beta Update 4/7/26

With how much more responsive it is, it should be much easier to use on the Deck. It wasn’t necessarily obnoxious to use, but I wouldn’t call it convenient either. Hopefully, this is going to be something that really helps when trying to install mods to play on the go.

Valve noted at the bottom of the page that they’re aiming to run this update as a beta for a few weeks or months to sort out the bugs and respond to feedback. They also plan to update other workshop pages, so we may be seeing changes across the board later on, but there’s no timeline for this just yet. Still, I’m happy to see it, regardless, and anything to make the Steam Deck experience better is worthwhile.

You can check out this beta by going to the workshop page, browse items for a game, and click the "Enter Steam Workshop Beta" button.
