Skyrim's Wii U-like Plugin Looks Like The Perfect Way To Play On Steam Deck

When SteamDeckHQ was still fairly new, I covered one of my favorite ways to play Wii U games. Using two screens, we could separate the dual screens that the Wii U usually uses and turn the Deck into what would be the Wii U gamepad screen. It was a surreal way to play, in an experience that I haven’t had the chance to use again in a long time. However, thanks to an intriguing tool, I have a reason to head back into Skyrim in an extremely interesting way.

Over on the Steam Deck subreddit, user Sorry-Bus-1176 showed a video of them playing Skyrim Special Edition in a similar way that someone would on the Wii U, using the tool SkyrimWebMonitor. They had a big monitor in the back, playing the game, and the Steam Deck was being used as a tool to get a real-time look at the map, switch weapons on the fly, and check out inventory, all without pausing the game.

It’s one of the coolest ways to play the game that I’ve seen in a long time. It was admittedly quite annoying how often I would have to go back to the menu in Skyrim, so being able to use a tool like this alleviates a lot of the annoyances that I felt when playing through the game.

It doesn’t seem like the tool is difficult to install either. All you have to do is install SkyrimWebMonitor like you would a Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) plugin and launch it using the SKSE exe. Once it’s done, all you have to do is go to the website in a browser on the same machine, configure it, and connect. So, what we would have to do here is start the game up, put it on the second, bigger screen, and then start our web browser and go to the site. It’ll mean we most likely have to be in desktop mode to do all this, but since this requires a second monitor anyway, it’s not the end of the world.

I haven’t had time to try this for myself, but it looks extremely cool, and it makes me wanna download the game and try it right now. It looks like a great new way to play one of the most moddable open world RPGs, since I already made the game, adding this one won’t be too much of an issue.
