Anbernic is said to be conjuring up another wildly 2000s-coded handheld. The device appears to flip in a way similar to the Sidekick from the early 2000s, though in a form that lends itself more to vertical handheld play.

The new handheld is unnamed, has not been seen or hinted at elsewhere, and for now exists only as a rumor. Still, many of the typical elements of Anbernic design make an appearance in the video shared within the Anbernic QQ fan group.

Anbernic Flipout Thing

The device features the Anbernic logo along the bottom of its chin, the standard rainbow colorway applied to its action buttons, and a somewhat obscure design language that we’ve come to associate mostly with Anbernic and occasionally MagicX.

Anbernic has been on a roll recently, releasing handhelds that evoke a strong sense of nostalgia. The RG DS, RG34XX, and its SP counterpart, and the RG Slide all borrow their main design inspiration from devices of the past. The RG Slide in particular targets the sliding mechanism of the PSP Go while leaving many of its other standout features behind.

This new device appears to call back to an often forgotten phone from 2010, the Motorola Flipout. The Flipout was designed in the early days of the smartphone takeover, when Motorola was still trying to push bold, experimental designs similar to those it had achieved with the Razr throughout the previous decade. Now, Anbernic seems to be bringing that design philosophy back to life in hopes that it can find a place in the handheld market.

The device appears to feature a 4:3 screen, and if recent releases are anything to go by, it may house the same 960p panel we’ve seen in devices like the RG477V, RG476H, and even the RG Slide. Anbernic is known for maximizing its return on investment when it comes to handheld internals. For example, the base hardware and chipset across the XX line are identical, with only the screens or external shells changing from device to device.

If this device does turn out to be real, Anbernic may be preparing to release one of the more unconventional handheld designs we’ve seen in recent months. MagicX recently released the One 35, which allows games to be played vertically instead of horizontally, but Anbernic seems focused on revisiting key moments in tech design to evoke a sense of nostalgia that some may have forgotten existed. If the handheld does materialize, we’ll be sure to share more details as they emerge.
