Proton Experimental Update Makes Big Change For Video Playback on Steam Deck

A new Proton Experimental update was released that makes one very big change to the layer. There is a new media source that has been implemented, which fixes and improves playback in numerous different titles, including Soul Calibur 6, Greedfall, Agony, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and Call of Cthulu. There may be some games with issues, and the team has noted that Resident Evil 7 and Village, Quantum Break, and Shin Megami Tensei 3 have some playback failures with this change.

If you are playing a game on Experimental and want to go back to the old media source, you can find a branch called "old-media-source" in the beta settings in preferences for Proton Experimental. There were also two reports that Raiden V Directors Cut and Moero Chronicles are now crashing on startup too.

Known issues:

• Resident Evil 7 videos fail to play.
• Resident Evil Village videos fail to play.
• Quantum Break videos have green flashes and intermittent crashes.
• Shin Megami Tensei III has intermittent video playback failure.

Users also report Raiden V Directors Cut and Moero Chronicles crashing on startup after this update.
