The Pokémon games were some of my favorites growing up, and I still find myself enjoying creature collectors as a whole. Now, it was only a matter of time before a creature collector game would be put in the free-to-play space, and that’s exactly what Aniimo sets out to do. I’ve had the pleasure of playing the game ahead of its launch tomorrow, and I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit. There’s still a little more I wanna do before I write my full review, so I won’t be publishing that yet, but I do want to give some thoughts on the game itself and touch on Steam Deck performance.

Going in, I fully expected to be more like Pokémon, with a big emphasis on capturing, battling, and training. Aniimo does have all of that, but it doesn’t feel like it was the main focus. We do get to roam around a giant world and capture various Aniimo roaming around, with each of them having their own elemental attributes and abilities. As we capture more or partake in battles, these creatures will level up and get stronger. It feels very much like Pokémon, and each creature does have its own breakdown of how powerful its stats can get, and how they may be influenced by its personality, so it’s a good idea to capture multiple of the same type to try to maximize the potential.
However, battles themselves are simplified and follow a real-time format. Each creature has a few abilities and/or an ultimate, and we take direct control of our creatures using the Twining system. It’s a decent system, but for anyone looking for depth similar to Pokémon, you won’t find it here. Battles are enjoyable, but not a defining feature that made the experience stand out.

The focus of the game is actually on the exploration, interaction, and everything else outside of it. There are tons of puzzles that will require thought to complete, and we can use the Twining system to control our Aniimo and solve them. Some of these puzzles may require using our Fire-elemental Flameruff to burn away vines, or our lightweight Celestis to fly around and reach the goal above. There’s a lot to find, and it all felt very rewarding.
There’s so much we can do, including building/decorating our own little home, which is interesting. There are also lots of familiar mechanics and items defined, with chests galore, filled with different currencies that we can use to train our Aniimo or use to buy cosmetics. There are no gacha mechanics from what I’ve seen so far, and I hope it continues that way. There’s a lot that’s being offered in the base experience, and I’m enjoying it so far.
As for Steam Deck performance, I unfortunately have not had the chance to try it out yet. The version of the game I got was a standalone PC launcher, but no matter what I tried, it would not recognize the free space on my device. So, I wasn’t able to install the game and try it for myself. However, not only is the game releasing on Steam, but I did get confirmation that it should be playable on the Deck with the right graphical configuration. They aren’t aiming for Steam Deck support just yet, but they also acknowledge that it should be possible. Looking at the minimum system requirements on Steam, I would consider that accurate.

From what I’ve had the pleasure of playing so far, I really enjoy Aniimo. It’s a decent creature collector that focuses less on battling and more on exploration. It’s a nice change of pace compared to what I’m usually used to when playing games like Pokémon. I’m looking forward to playing more and trying it on the Steam Deck when it launches tomorrow, but if you are a fan of creature collectors and looking for something new to try out, this is one I can recommend so far.
Aniimo can be pre-loaded right now before it launches tomorrow.
