Let's be honest, we all saw this coming, but it was always going to be a bit of a shock when the news finally dropped. Sony has just confirmed that they will no longer be allowing physical games to be released on PlayStation platforms from January 2028, whether they be 1st or 3rd party titles.

This means we can also inevitably draw the conclusion that the PS6 will not support disc releases either.

It's always been a heated debate, but digital game sales have been on a constant increase, while physical has been on the opposite trajectory. This, combined with the news that GTA VI will be a digital-only release, likely due to the size of the game requiring multiple Blu-ray discs, likely helped Sony come to the conclusion that now is the time to back out of disc production.

Here's the direct quote from the PS Blog post:

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

Some big questions remain, though, such as backwards compatibility. Does this mean that your physical PS4 and PS5 games won't work on the PS6 if it lacks a disc drive or an option for one? Will Sony offer a way to transfer your physical games into digital ones? Or will you just be expected to hold onto your PS5 to play your old library? No doubt we'll get more clarification over the coming months.

In other news, the PS3 and PSVita stores will gradually be shut down in various regions over the next year, with a worldwide shutdown in July 2027, although you will still be able to download previously purchased digital titles. But it does highlight the vulnerability that digital stores can have.

What do you think about PlayStation going fully digital in 2028? Will this affect your purchasing decisions going forward? Let us know in the comments.
