We have been seeing more and more companies expand past their usual norms to reach as many gamers as possible. Valve did this with the Steam Deck, ASUS did this with the ROG Ally, and Xbox is doing this with the Xbox Ally and upcoming Project Helix. For a while, it’s been rumored that PlayStation would be doing something similar, but recent comments made by PlayStation’s CEOs during a Games and Network Service meeting have started to solidify that further.

In this meeting, PlayStation was asked how they can bring back players to the PlayStation ecosystem after they had migrated to gaming PCs during COVID. In their answer, they mentioned that they are releasing accessories and peripherals to get rid of the notion that PlayStation only belongs in the living room. However, they also mentioned that for next-generation hardware, they are looking at an expansion of usage styles that extend beyond the living room:
Q: How can you bring back to the PlayStation platform users who migrated to gaming PCs during the COVID period? In aiming for profit growth, are there limitations on what can be done in the short term, or do you see the potential for more significant changes with the next-generation platform?
A: PlayStation has long been strongly associated with the idea of playing in the living room. However, in recent years, more users globally have been using personal monitors. In response, we are selling peripherals such as monitors and speakers to break away from the fixed perception that “PlayStation equals the living room” and to broaden usage scenarios. For the next-generation platform, rather than simply serving as an alternative to PCs, we aim to deliver value that is unique to PlayStation. This includes not only technological advancements but also an expansion of usage styles, enabling a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room.
PlayStation Game & Network Services (G&NS) Segment Small Meeting Q&A Summary
Well, it’s not an outright confirmation; this really sounds like they’re working on alternative ways to access their ecosystem outside of the conventional methods they had previously excelled in. And honestly, the only way I can see an expansion outside the living room making sense would be portable hardware.
This wouldn’t be PlayStation’s first time diving into portable hardware either, since they had previously launched the PSP and PS Vita. These were two of my favorite handhelds, so the idea of them getting back to a more powerful handheld with the PS6 generation is exciting. This could also end up being our main way to play PlayStation games on the go moving forward, since they are stepping away from PC development for their single-player narrative experiences.
Currently, it feels a little bit ridiculous to release new hardware in this market, since it’s going to be pretty expensive. RAM and SSD costs are only going up, and are projected to go up throughout the next few years at least. So, releasing any hardware now is going to inflate the price way higher than affordable. It sucks to hear, but that’s the unfortunate reality of tech right now.
Still, I am excited by the idea of PlayStation getting back into handhelds, and I’m excited to see what they come up with.
