There is no shortage of roguelikes to play on the Steam Deck, and Neon Abyss 2 is shaping up to be another great one. Despite some setbacks, it's a solid experience that I am confident is only going to get better overtime. Still, the gorgeous, vibrant pixel art and enjoyable gameplay of the side scrolling shooter stand out against similar games.

And so far, it's awesome on the Steam Deck. It runs like a charm, hitting 90 FPS with under 10W battery drain and feeling right at home with a controller. I love playing it on the Deck, especially when in bed and relaxing. I had a chance to ask a couple of questions to developer Veewo Games to learn a little more about what they had to do to make it ready for that illustrious Verified badge, and it's quite interesting to read about it:
- Did you make any changes to the game specifically for the Steam Deck and to hit that Verified badge?
- Short answer is yes, we did need a little bit more work than we thought. Quite a few devs in our team are playing games on Steam Deck regularly, we naturally wanted to have Steam Deck verified from day one. So we checked the Steam Deck requirements and tested our game in very early stage, our windows build worked very well with builtin Photon support. On graphics aspect, we barely need to do anything besides transcoding videos in our game into WebM format. While for controller system, it was more complicated than we thought. We added Steam Deck controller support before submitting the game, but the first review was only Playable with feedback referring to the controller adaptation. It turns out there is some inconsistency on UI hints of controller buttons and some missing features while using the default controller. It was all quite easy to fix, the fix took us no more than two days. And finally, we got the charm green verified badge with another submission for review.
- Was it challenging to make sure the UI and text were prominent and readable for smaller screens like the Deck?
- Our first game was published on Nintendo Switch, so we had the experience to work with portable consoles. While developing the sequel, we kept that in mind and saved a lot of work during platform adaptation for Steam Deck. The UI in game was not overwhelming so it wasn’t hard to keep them clear on small screens, but the auto-adaptation for localized texts were a little bit trickier.
- Did you use the Steam Deck at all to help playtest and develop the game leading up to the early access launch?
- Of course, as mentioned before, we have some team members owning Steam Deck, they regularly test the game on Deck, especially when they are not in office.
- Would you say Neon Abyss 2 fits well in the Steam Deck/portable ecosystem and recommend playing it this way?
- Absolutely, Neon Abyss is well known for its pixel art style and its unique roguelike + platformer gameplay. In Neon Abyss 2, the pixel art style has been greatly upgraded, we hope the neon and colorful blasts bring a delightful experience for Steam Deck players. On the other hand, Neon Abyss 2 is a knowledge-based game, so the control of platformer + shooting is quite casual, as you know the system better and better, you don’t need to have high skills to conquer the abyss. It’s a pick and play game just like the experience Steam Deck delivers.
While I wasn't surprised that the game would run well on the Steam Deck, Neon Abyss 1 was released on the Switch and they have experience optimizing for lower-powered devices, but it's still nice to learn about. I was intrigued to see how they transcoded their videos to WebM format and had to adjust the UI to make sure it hit that Verified badge as soon as it launched, but I love hearing how much they valued making sure it was ready to go and hit the ground running.
So far, they are doing great, and I can't wait to see how the game improve as it moves through development.
Neon Abyss 2 can be purchased for $19.99 and is rated Verified.
