There are so many great games to play on the Steam Deck, but some of my favorites are classic titles that just run flawlessly on the device. While I can always go back and play the originals, developer Nightdive Studios has been remastering classic titles with modern support, better visuals, and more features. Yesterday, their newest remaster was released, and I definitely didn't expect to see it.

Just as they did last year with DOOM+DOOM 2, Nightdive has worked with Bethesda and id Software to bring Heretic and Hexen back in a full-blown remaster. In this case, we have cross-platform multiplayer and co-op, mod support with a built-in mod browser, improved performance and rendering for 4K resolution and 120 FPS gameplay, better controller support with a weapon carousel for faster switching, quick save/load support, engine fixes, and much more.
Not only do we have all of these enhancements, but we also have two brand new episodes, one for each game, that were designed by id Software and Nightdive Studios. With 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps across all of the episodes, it feels like a completely new experience for those who have already played these classics previously. As soon as I saw it released, I went ahead and purchased it, and I had to see just how well it runs and feels on the Steam Deck.

Just like other Nightdive Studios games, Heretic+Hexen runs like a charm on the Steam Deck. It is performing at 90 FPS with a range of 7W - 9W battery drain, with only one moment in Hexen: Beyond Heretic where the battery drain spiked to 11W, but I didn't see any other moments where this happened again. Overall, it runs like a charm and feels perfect with the Deck's gamepad.
I also wanted to try gyro controls to see how well they work, and it's just as fantastic as the rest of the game. I didn't see any in-game setting for gyro, so we do have to enable it in Steam Input. It's quite easy to do. All you have to do is set the Gyro Behavior to "As Joystick" and you should be set. It works exceptionally well, and it helped a lot with fine-tuning my aiming.
Overall, this is another fantastic game from Nightdive and id Software, and it feels perfect for the Steam Deck. It is near flawless in performance, and retains what made the original games so memorable. It's a perfect way to spend the weekend, playing some retro FPS in bed, and I love it.
Heretic+Hexen is available for $14.99 and is rated Steam Deck Verified.
