Gothic 1 Remake was provided by THQ Nordic for review. Thank you
The Gothic 1 Remake has just released, and I am elated. I have been following development for quite some time, so I have been very much looking forward to playing this one. Due to us getting the key quite close to release, we haven't had enough time to play through the whole game, and we didn't want to rush a giant RPG like this. Our full review will come soon, but in the meantime, I wanted to share my thoughts about the game so far and how it performs on the Steam Deck, and whether we would recommend it or not.

Gothic 1 Remake has been an incredible journey so far. I call it a journey because this is a game that constantly tests the player's knowledge, patience, and willingness to learn. Starting out as a weak, helpless peasant and gradually growing stronger through exploration, experimentation, and lessons learned from countless mistakes is what makes this such a rewarding oldschool RPG experience.
What elevates that experience even further is the game's excellent combat system. With a wide variety of combos, parries, ripostes, and advanced mechanics, combat feels deep and satisfying without constantly holding the player's hand. The game encourages experimentation and allows players to discover its systems naturally, making every new skill learned feel genuinely earned.
Combined with the constant urge to explore and uncover the colony's secrets, Gothic 1 Remake delivers an experience that is both challenging and incredibly addictive. It's the kind of RPG journey that feels increasingly rewarding the more time and effort you invest in it.
When it comes to Unreal Engine 5 on handhelds, I always get a little nervous, mostly because of how inconsistent and difficult to optimize UE5 games can be. And in Gothic 1 Remake’s case, I’m sad to say that this game is definitely not Steam Deck friendly.

At the beginning, performance actually looked promising. I was getting stable and consistent framerates, and the game even gave me enough room to increase a few settings while still holding a solid 30 FPS without turning the visuals into a muddy mess.
Unfortunately, as the game progressed, everything went south.
Framerates started dropping below 30 FPS, even at the lowest possible settings. But honestly, that is not even the worst part. The real problem is the insane amount of stuttering, which became more frequent the further I got into the game. Whenever I entered a new zone or moved the camera too quickly, the game would frequently freeze for a moment, making the overall experience feel incredibly unstable.
I experimented with several workarounds, including different Proton layers, injecting an FSR 4 file, running the game from Desktop Mode, and pretty much everything else you can imagine. But the answer is still no: Gothic 1 is currently an atrocious experience on Steam Deck.
Even for huge Gothic fans, we suggest skipping this one for now on the Steam Deck, or at least waiting for some serious optimization patches.

Gothic 1 Remake can be purchased for $49.99.
