Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one of the biggest JRPGs and it's still crazy to me that it runs on the Steam Deck. In my review, I mention that while it isn't the most stable experiences in crowded areas, it's amazing that something this huge is even remotely playable, and it really is! However, I want to applaud Square Enix's dedication to making it the best it can on Steam Deck, and it continues even after release.

In a new patch released today, Square fixed a couple of issues and improved the game's overall stability, but on top of those, they also reduced the download size for Rebirth on the Steam Deck. They specifically mention the package size, which makes me think that it's only the download size and not the install size, so it will still be over 140GB installed, but it won't take as long to download now.
There isn't much more to this update, but I am still really happy to see it. Any work done to improve a game on the Steam Deck is one I like to celebrate, but even more for bigger games that are just barely a good experience. The dedication of teams to make it happen are wonderful, and I appreciate that Square is still working on it.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth can be purchased on Steam for $69.99.

hopefully developers will finally start using the steam deck specific depot option and package games with just medium resolution textures and cutscenes downscaled to 800p. for unreal engine they don't even need a seperate build of the game, but they would need to have separate cooked asset packages for steam deck and the game would have to work the same with both asset packages, and sometimes devs hardcode things.
it's a bit of work, but making the high resolution textures as a seperate content package is very much helpful when game install sizes are this big.
Looking at SteamDB there appears to be a new SteamDeck depot with a 20GB download and 20.65GB install size. I presume they only kept the assets required for the steam deck preset?
