The next three months are looking like they’re going to be filled with amazing games. It’s like every week, there’s at least one new fantastic game that’s going to be released, culminating in September, where we will have an insane amount of games releasing all around the same time. However, next month is going to be filled with some great ones, and one of the titles I’m most looking forward to is Echoes of Aincrad. I’ve always been a fan of Sword Art Online, and seeing it in game form is always a treat. And thanks to the Steam Next Fest, we all have a chance to try it out early.

A demo of Echoes of Aincrad was released to coincide with the Steam Next Fest, and based on its content, I’m really looking forward to the game. The world is vast and beautiful, and I like the progression systems that make you feel like there’s enough room to experiment and customize the way you want to. The little bit I played makes me excited for the full release, and I can’t wait to play through it next month. However, I am a little bit worried about how we will run on the Steam Deck.

It’s important to know that this is a demo, so it may not reflect the final performance of the game when it fully releases. However, it does give some idea as to what to expect, and I definitely have my worries.

The game does not hit 30 FPS in this demo, even when all the settings are turned to the lowest, and it’s supposed to prioritize performance. Even in the prologue, which starts us off in a closed-off dungeon, it can’t stick above 30 FPS in almost any spot. From what I could tell, GPU usage is being pushed to the limit here, and the CPU seems to still be looking for some resources. Because of that, performance regularly drops and does not stay anywhere near playable.

This gets worse in some fights, and when there are a lot of effects on the screen, performance can even drop into the 15 range. It goes back up into the 20s after this, but it’s not great no matter what. And it continues to get worse as soon as we leave the dungeon. It starts to get a little bit better immediately, but as soon as we hit the town, performance will dip even further. It will stick to the low 20s the whole time when running around, most likely due to all of the people around in a crowded area.

It doesn’t get any better once we are able to take Wes and head into the open world. While it does look beautiful, it doesn’t perform beautifully. Just like the dungeon, it will consistently drop under 30 FPS and stick to the low 20s, getting slightly worse when we’re in combat.

Now, there may be ways to improve the performance, like forcing the resolution lower through Steam, but since this is a demo and not indicative of the final performance, I want to save the bulk of my testing for the full release. I am still hoping that it will somehow be able to perform well, and the spec sheet isn’t asking for too much past what the Steam Deck is capable of, but based on the demo, it’s not going to be great to take on the go. However, I’m really enjoying Echoes of Aincrad so far through the demo, and I will keep my hopes high and look forward to playing the game as soon as it releases, regardless.

You can check out the demo for yourself on the Steam store page, and if you like what you’re playing, you can pre-purchase the game ahead of its July 9th release date for $69.99.
