When it comes to JRPG‘s, Square Enix really stands out. Not only have they made iconic games like Final Fantasy, but they have also tried out so many unique ways of telling the stories. One of my favorites uses the diorama-styled art, where it looks like our characters are running around in very detailed, oversized environments. Even the characters look like they could be made from real life diorama, which is something we saw most recently in Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined. However, one of the first games I noticed that uses this style just dropped on Steam last week, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster is a remaster of the original game that was released on 3DS. It has spawned a sequel, which is already available on Steam, so with this release, we should be able to play through the entire series so far directly on PC. This remaster of the original game was released as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, so I’m glad to see it released here, along with all the enhancements. These include higher resolution graphics, a redesigned UI, two new mini games, and a slew of quality of life improvements, like being able to fast forward through cutscenes.

On top of that, the game was released on Steam with the Steam Deck Verified badge. This means that, according to Valve, the game is a great experience on the Steam Deck, with a working control scheme, showing the correct icons, a good default graphic setting, and readable text. Knowing the original game was released on the 3DS, I’m not surprised by the rating, but since Valve’s rating can be incorrect, I wanted to try it myself and see if it’s actually a great experience.

For the most part, it really is a great experience. It is able to stick to 90 FPS with ease, averaging around 10W battery drain. This is all on the highest graphical quality, and paired with the OLED screen, it’s just fantastic. However, there were a few times I saw the framerate drop. When zooming out to look at the whole castle map or when running around the castle, the frame rate would drop to 80. We can fix this by forcing the GPU Clock Speed Frequency up to 1600, but it does bring the battery drain up to around 14W. So, I would recommend just capping the framerate to 60.

Still, for what it’s worth, it’s running exceptionally well. Sometimes, the Verified badge doesn’t mean that much, but in this case, it definitely does. This is a great game to play on the Steam Deck, and I highly recommend it.
