Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration has already earned praise for its deeper look into the history of one of gaming's most iconic companies. Now, with their first big downloadable content (DLC), The Wider World of Atari, Atari and developer Digital Eclipse are continuing that legacy. This expansion, which is now available on Steam, adds a wealth of content that surpasses what the base game already has to offer.
Arcade staples like Berzerk, Frenzy, and Red Baron are among the nineteen extra games available in the downloadable content. Stellar Track and Submarine Commander are just two of the rare 2600 Sears exclusives that fans of Atari's home consoles can discover. It’s a fascinating look into games that, for many, have been hard to access—unless you were lucky enough to own an old Sears catalog from way back in the Eighties! (I feel old now!)

Beyond Gaming
However, gaming is only one aspect. The fact that it gives life to more of Atari's untold stories is one of the reasons why The Wider World of Atari is so great. Eight new video segments, interviews, and behind-the-scenes insights are included with the new playable content. Featuring commentary from industry trailblazers such as Pong creator Al Alcorn, the DLC delves into the creative process of artist Evelyn Seto, who designed Atari's iconic "Fuji" logo. Historicists will adore this.
Something really cool about seeing the devotion to Atari still strong today is the way Digital Eclipse emphasizes the role of the fan community in preserving unreleased prototypes and creating "homebrew" games.

Everything that made Atari 50 so captivating—a love letter to gaming history—feels like it's being expanded upon in The Wider World of Atari. It goes a lot further than a simple compilation of games—it offers a contemplative examination of how Atari's universe grew beyond the games alone. It makes oldies like me feel nostalgic for the past! If retro is your thing, then why not Wishlist on Steam today to keep up to date on any future announcements?
