The news we didn't want to hear, but probably all knew was coming. Epic has just lifted the lid for an early look at the upcoming Unreal Engine 6 (due in Late 2027), and while Unreal Engine 5 brought us huge enhancements for lighting and visuals, Unreal Engine 6 seems to be largely focused on changes under the hood for developers, rather than players.

Perhaps the biggest (or at least most controversial) change is the fact that AI models, such as Claude and Gemini, will now be integrated directly into the Unreal Engine IDE, allowing the AI tools to assist you in design and programming, with the aim of reducing development times.

There's already uproar whenever a developer uses AI in their games; however, it seems like Unreal Engine 6 will push this even further by weaving AI tools directly into the IDE, which will definitely have a knock-on effect for how many Unreal Engine developers choose to use AI.

Among other changes is that the Unreal Editor for Fortnite will be discontinued, and instead, its features will be integrated into Unreal Engine 6. This includes the Verse logic language being integrated into UE6, offering a more accessible alternative compared to the current C++ language.

For those of you who are worried about what future Fortnite development might look like, don't worry, while UEFN is disappearing, UE6 will take over as the new development tool for Fortnite content when it releases into Early Access in late 2027.
