It was a term that many took exception to before the Steam Machine launched, and even more so after we started seeing the reviews regarding the Steam Machine's performance. Valve initially claimed that the Steam Machine was capable of "4k Gaming at 60 FPS with FSR" on the device's store page, but the Steam Hardware Updates over on X (Twitter) noticed that that claim has been removed from the page, instead being replaced with "Up to 4k gaming with FSR 4.1".

The key points here are that Valve removed the straight "4k" claim and replaced it with "up to 4k", and crucially, they removed the claim of "4k gaming at 60 FPS", as in most modern titles, that's just not possible, no matter how much upscaling you use. The Steam Machine is quite firmly a 1080p gaming machine in my opinion.

Of course, you could argue that some games are playable at 4k, 60 FPS, but when making a claim like this, you would expect a fair chunk of modern games to be playable at the terms specified, and they aren't, according to the reviews we've seen. Playing Stardew Valley at 8k 120 FPS doesn't count, by the way.

That being said, indie games and plenty of older AAA titles seem to perform well on the Steam Machine, and for those, 4k @ 60 FPS is definitely within the realm of possibility, just don't expect to be playing Cyberpunk 2077 or 007 First Light at those settings.
