With the current market conditions, we have been seeing rising prices in almost all of our favorite tech. And recently, it reached the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck OLED models, both went up in price, with the 512GB rising by $240, and the 1TB rising by $300. Unfortunately, this is just the reality of AI companies demanding components and raising the cost for everyone. It’s a real shame, since it’s starting to become more and more difficult to afford gaming hardware. Sadly, it has also now affected the Asia markets.

Yesterday, it was announced that the Steam Deck OLED on Komodo who’s gonna be getting a price increase across all the Asia regions it covers. Now, it’s about 38%-51% more expensive for each model:
512GB OLED Prices:
- Japan - 137,980 ($864) (38% increase)
- Korea - 1,298,000 ($855) (45% increase)
- Taiwan - 26,280 ($835) (38% increase)
- Hong Kong - 6,488 ($827) (41% Increase)
1TB OLED Prices:
- Japan - 167,980 ($1,051) (46% increase)
- Korea - 1,578,000 ($1,039) (51% increase)
- Taiwan - 31,800 ($1,010) (41% increase)
- Hong Kong - 7,788 ($993) (42% Increase)
This also isn’t the first time crisis went up. They first went up in March of this year, making this the second price increase in Asia since the market conditions changed. Looking at the prices, it’s still a bit cheaper to get in the US right now, but it’s cutting it very close.
On top of that, the official Twitter/X account for Steam Deck’s Japanese branch has mentioned that restocking of the models for shipment in Japan will be back on June 4th. So, if anyone in Japan wants to get a steam deck at these prices, they will be able to do so in two days.
Still, it’s been crazy seeing how the market is affecting the price of the Deck, and it makes me worried about the adoption of the device moving forward. It’s still one of my favorite devices to use, but I’m finding it harder and harder to recommend at its current price when there are more powerful handhelds that are around the same price, and we can just install Bazzite on them.

I can't say much about the USA or the dollar but since the made salary in Japan is much lower than for in example in Germany even the just 38% increase is a big deal.
Electronic stuff was never cheap in Japan and while I know that in many countries the costs for living a rising Japan has compared again to Germany never saw a real increase of the minimum salary.
So I am glad that we got our two Steam Decks years ago when they were released in Japan for the first time.
