As I have mentioned many times throughout my years of writing, including in one of our recent Summer Game Fest articles, I’m not a big fan of racing games. They aren’t inherently bad, but it’s just not my speed. So, you might be surprised to know that I checked out a racing game at Summer Game Fest. But you may be even more surprised to know that I loved it, and they didn’t want to stop playing. Star Wars: Galactic Racer is going to be one of the only racing games I will not be able to put down.

Maybe it’s because the Star Wars IP is so well-known, and that alone invokes a lot of memories, but that doesn’t change how enjoyable the game is. Instead of becoming a Jedi or being part of gigantic battles across the Star Wars universe, this game focuses on pod racing. We will choose between different types of pods to race across iconic planets that we have come to know and love throughout the galaxy.
The racing is intense and exhilarating. Each of the different types of pods handles differently, but they all have some perks of their own, as well as abilities to help us. It’s extremely fast-paced, and there will be a lot of decisions that need to be made fast to make sure you can get ahead of the others and win the race. Yet even when we’re moving so fast, it’s still relatively easy to make decisions to stop yourself from crashing. The tracks are wide enough to make giant turns and drifts when needed, and even when we’re boosting and going extremely fast, it’s still manageable to keep ourselves going.
On top of that, each track in Galactic Racer is gorgeous. There’s just so much eye candy that it’s hard not to be amazed as we race. Going through the star destroyers on Jakku stunned me, and I can't wait to see the different levels and locations of each planet we will get to race on. Speaking of, each of the different levels of each planet feels quite different from the others, which I didn't expect. I’m also a bit of a sucker for the cinematic camera angles showing when other pods crash and get destroyed. It reminds me a lot of Burnout, and I loved Burnout.

However, while I love the racing, it’s actually the different modes that really excite me. The campaign plays out like a roguelike, where we need to complete races/challenges across a tree of nodes on 4 planets, and each time, we can get credits, upgrade points, and new parts. All these can be used to improve our pod, increasing the different stats that it has to make it easier to turn, better heat management for the boost, and more. And of course, the more we use the different types of pods, the more they will level up and will get better stats permanently. I knew there would be a campaign, but I didn’t expect it to be structured this way, and I love it.
I did get to see the beginning of the story that will be told in the campaign; it’s pretty interesting. I usually don’t expect much going into these kinds of games, but I like where it’s heading so far. We play as someone who is basically retired from racing, but has been roped back into it and decides to beat a racer who is trying to take over the league. It's very cinematic as well, giving it that movie-like quality that I usually don't expect from racing games, which was like a breath of fresh air.
But there are other game modes apart from this. We have the traditional multiplayer and race modes, but we also have a special game mode where we can replay some of the classic races from the movies. I got to play as Sebulba racing on Tatooine, which gave me this weird nostalgic feeling. It brought me back to when I first watched Episode 1 with my father, and I saw Sebulba show up as Anakin's rival in the race. There is a good chunk of these kinds of races, so it will be interesting to see what others pop up.
Ultimately, this is one of the few racing games I have played that I actually enjoyed. The roguelike nature of the campaign and Burnout-esque gameplay mechanics made the fast-paced pod racing way more enjoyable. I always get worried about how I will feel with racing games, but Star Wars: Galactic Racer never gave me that same, dreaded feeling I would get in the pit of my stomach when I start driving around the racetrack. I can't wait for this release, and it will be a day 1 purchase for my library.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer can be pre-purchased for $59.99 ahead of its October 6th release date.
