Just Cause 2 Is Now Steam Deck Verified After Its Executable Issue

There was a good handful of games I used to play religiously back in the day, and one of those was Just Cause 2. The open world, action gameplay, and emphasis on destroying locations in cool ways, thanks to the sandbox nature of the game, hooked me in and kept me playing for hundreds and hundreds of hours. Because it’s on the older side, I thought it was going to be perfectly playable on the Steam Deck without issue, but for the longest time, there was one. However, all of that seems to have been fixed, and I couldn’t be happier.

Last week, the game got the Steam Deck Verified badge, which came out of nowhere. Before this, the game was rated as Unsupported, which I feel was very accurate. The game would indefinitely hang on the “Updating Executable” text when launching, making it impossible to play without replacing the game’s .exe ourselves. However, I am pleased to confirm that this is no longer an issue, and the game will launch without needing to change anything on the Steam Deck.

It’s possible that something with Proton 11’s beta fixes this, since the game now defaults to Proton 11 specifically. It does still take a little bit longer to load and will look like it’s going to hang on that same “Updating Executable” text, but if you wait 30 seconds, it should launch. I confirm this on multiple different devices, including a friend's, and they all had the same exact response when launching.

Otherwise, the game is one of the best to play on the Steam Deck. It runs at 60 FPS with low battery drain and can even hit 90 in a lot of areas. It does get a little intensive in big fights, so I recommend keeping it at 60, but it’ll be smooth sailing regardless. Now that there’s no more hanging, Just Cause 2 has become an easy recommendation for the Steam Deck.
