How to Fish Is A Crazy Co-Op Fishing Simulator That Runs Wonderfully on Steam Deck

There is no shortage of smaller multiplayer titles; one of the ones that just appeared on my feed was released yesterday and has tons of players. How to Fish may have only been out for one day, but it already has over 35,000 concurrent players as of writing. It looked crazy, and in screenshots, I was seeing people catching fish and seagulls and killing them using guns and brass knuckles. So, with how popular it was, I decided to grab it for myself and see if it’s something that could be enjoyable on the Steam Deck, and I am happy to say it is.

From what I’ve played so far, the game feels like a light fishing simulator mixed with crazy ways to kill them. We will always catch a creature whenever our fishing rod is in the water, and we will have to use knives, brass knuckles, and guns to kill them to sell for money. The way we kill them can also add to their value, encouraging some experimentation to find the best ways to get as much money as possible from our prey.

It’s definitely part of the rising trend of “friendslop” games, but unlike the name, it doesn’t automatically make it bad. I played by myself, but I can see it being a lot of fun with friends as we all catch fish and have to work together to kill the bigger fish. And from what I’ve played so far, it shouldn’t be difficult to enjoy on the Steam Deck.

Settings-wise, How to Fish defaults to the highest quality, and it’s performing at 60 FPS and above. This may change as we get more complex, islands, or catch more fish, but it was holding pretty strong at 60 while staying below 16W battery drain. This indicates that there is some wiggle room, but even if it gets too demanding, I can’t see it going below 45 FPS.

The game is currently rated Playable, with the only knock against that being small in-game text. I haven’t seen any text that’s too small yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it shows up later on. Still, I would consider this a pretty safe game to play on the deck and have a hilarious experience with friends.
