Dwarf Fortress Finally Receives its Adventure Mode Update

When you think of Dwarf Fortress, you probably think of an incredibly complex world simulation where you have to run a Dwarven empire while a multitude of things threaten to exterminate you. Well, you wouldn't be wrong, but the latest update to Dwarf Fortress adds the highly-anticipated "Adventure Mode".

Instead of managing your fortress, adventure mode lets you take on a more personal role, heading out into the world with your own personal character, going on quests, and exploring dungeons, all while the game's simulation is running exactly as it would in Fortress Mode.

In Adventure Mode, you'll be able to build up your own reputation, gather a party to fight by your side, as well as walk through your own fortresses that you've built (or lost). Explore mythical dungeons to find unique items and improve your stats, all while listening to the hour of additional music made for the game. It's essentially introducing a classic RPG mode into the game.

The developers explain that Adventure Mode was always their dream. Dwarf Fortress is designed to be a game that you eventually lose, and to be able to go into Adventure Mode and revisit the ruins of your old empire was something that they had strived for. Now the developers have realized their vision of being able to explore in detail the world that Dwarf Fortress generates, being able to personally visit far away empires, get up close with the combat, or just travel and enjoy the world.

Dwarf Fortress is available on Steam for $29.99, although it's currently 20% off until the end of the month. The game is rated as Playable on the Steam Deck, due to controller issues and small in-game text. As you might imagine, the game has rather complex controls.
