Atari Announces 'Breakout Beyond', Reviving an Old Classic, Coming 2025

We're getting used to Atari delving into its back catalog to bring us some reimagined classics, and now it's time for the brick-breaking classic Breakout to make its triumphant return later this year in the form of Breakout Beyond!

This time though, you'll be playing the game from a side perspective (how exciting!), with the brick-breaking action happening in horizontal fashion rather than vertical.

Breakout Beyond promises to deliver 72 different levels, filled with vibrant gameplay and a pumping soundtrack. Plus, you can play through all of this in local 2-player co-op with a friend!

Atari is teaming up with Choice Provisions, the creator of the BIT.TRIP series to bring this reinvention of Breakout to us. You'll have to aim your shots and try to get the highest score by making combos that will fire off colorful visual effects. If you break a special block, you'll earn a power-up which can give you some extra brick-breaking abilities.

The audio and visual effects also increase in intensity depending on your current combo, so you'll get that serotonin hit when you're doing well too!

The game doesn't have network multiplayer, but it does support Remote Play Together, which would be a viable way of playing this in co-op with a friend.

Breakout Beyond is due to launch on Steam later this year, you can wishlist it now. The game has full controller support and should be easy for the Steam Deck to run.
