Anbernic Releases Linux for The RG DS

Anbernic has released a new Linux firmware option for the RG DS. The handheld previously only officially supported Android, but that has now changed.

The RG DS originally shipped with a customized version of Android 14. Not long after launch, many users felt the stock software was not fully optimized for the handheld’s dual-screen design, with unnecessary background processes affecting the overall experience.

Soon after, Gamma released GammaOS for the device, a streamlined version of Android that improved game latency, menu responsiveness, and the overall setup process for many users.

Later on, the ROCKNIX team introduced their own Linux distribution for the handheld. The firmware removed much of the unnecessary software overhead and allowed users to boot Linux directly from a microSD card without replacing the stock Android operating system.

Now, Anbernic has released its own Linux firmware for the RG DS that works in a similar way while also adding a handful of small features that help set it apart. These additions include new themes, independent brightness controls for each display, custom font support, and improved dual-screen functionality.

• New built-in themes including DS Dark, DS Light, and a retro-inspired Classic mode.
• A redesigned Linux interface built specifically for dual-screen handheld use instead of a standard Android-style layout.
• Separate brightness adjustment controls for both the upper and lower displays.
• The ability to swap screen positions during gameplay for systems that use two displays.
• Improved screen synchronization and smoother overall performance in Nintendo DS games.
• Support for installing custom system fonts.
• An integrated input testing menu for checking buttons and controls.
• System artwork and console graphics can now appear on the secondary screen while playing single-screen platforms.
• Faster startup times and a more responsive sleep/wake experience compared to earlier firmware versions.
• Linux can run directly from a microSD card without removing the stock Android installation.

Anbernic continues to support the RG DS even as the new RG Rotate begins arriving in customers’ hands. The company has continued updating older handhelds alongside newer releases, showing long-term support remains part of its strategy.
