At Summer Game Fest, I had the pleasure of playing through two different Alien games, both of which gave vastly different experiences from each other. While one of them focuses more on co-op action, the other goes all in on immersive horror, and that’s the one I want to talk about right now. I had the pleasure of playing a little snippet of Alien Isolation 2, and while it wasn’t a long demo, it did confirm one thing for me: this is going to be terrifying.

As soon as I was able to start playing, after the opening cutscene, it almost immediately felt like Alien Isolation. It gave me the same chills, anxiety, and gut feeling that something was wrong throughout the demo. That feeling is something that made Isolation stand out for me, so getting that same feeling from this slice was fantastic.
It was a short demo, but it was enough to convince me that it’s going to be a horrifying experience, with some unique twists. One of my biggest questions actually came from the opening section, where we are in a truck that gets stopped, and we have to venture out into a forest to figure out what’s going on. It looks like developer Creative Assembly is challenging themselves to take that claustrophobic, close-quarters experience from the first game and expand on it to give us that same feeling in outside areas. Isolation 2 isn’t going to just keep us in one space station; we are going to have to venture out into the wilderness. So, I’m particularly excited to see how they are going to translate that closed-off horror experience into an open one.
However, one thing I can say for sure is that creepy atmosphere from the first game was translated perfectly into the second game’s open areas. I got the same chills just walking through the forest, thinking that anything could happen and the alien could pop up out of nowhere. It was dark, rainy, and ominous, exactly like I would hope for a sequel to one of my favorite horror games of all time.

After walking around in the forest a bit, we find our way to a downed section of Sevastopol Station, which was really cool to see. We decided to go into it and see if there are any survivors, but unfortunately, all we do is find the Alien. This immediately brought back that helpless feeling, since there’s no way we can actually beat the alien. This culminated in a lot of sneaking around and running away, since it’s in our best interest not to directly engage. Still, it’s exactly the experience I feel again, and they did it wonderfully.
It looks like scavenging and crafting are still going to play a role in our experience, as in the demo, we had to find scraps and electronics to repair the power. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is something we are going to need to do throughout the entire game.
There wasn’t much more of the demo to play; it was relatively short, and I didn’t have a chance to ask any questions. However, if you are hoping that Alien Isolation 2 will give you the same horror-filled experience the original did, you are going to be in for a treat. I can’t wait to see what else is being cooked up, and if there will be any further references to the original game.
