The dino-busting PvP/PvE game, Exoprimal, is out now and finally we can all get into the battle with our friends. The game is a ton of fun, really getting into the battles and working with your team of 5 to rush through waves of different dinos, as well as fending off against the enemy team, makes for a really awesome and exhilarating experience that can be a ton of fun, especially when played with friends. With how intense the game looks, we were curious on how the game is going to run on the popular handhelds, and thanks to Capcom sending us an early copy, we can report on how these will run!
With some testing, we have a solid idea on what Exoprimal can achieve on the ROG Ally and while our specific settings will come later, I wanted to take a moment to give an idea on how far you can push Exoprimal on the ROG Ally. With the Ally being a more powerful device, I had high hopes before going into the game that it could run extremely well and after playing, I can say it will be a good time for sure!
On Turbo Mode, the lowest setting was able to hit around 50 - 60 FPS, which isn't the solid 60 I was hoping, but it was definitely getting close to it. The inclusion of FSR 2.0 really helps with this too and keeping it at Quality mode while the quality preset is on "Low" (second to lowest) allows the game to run at a solid 45 FPS, on 120hz mode, which feels incredibly smooth. Paired with the incredible and vibrant screen, this is an awesome way to really experience the game.
This is my favorite way to experience the game so far and with how smooth it feels, the experience is fantastic. It isn't 60 FPS, which is a shame, but that doesn't harm the experience to me. There are a couple of drops throughout that brought it down to 41-42, which I didn't feel during gameplay, but playing plugged in with the settings eliminates any drops and will get a solid 45.
Cutscenes, however, will not be able to handle 45 FPS and will sometimes even drop to the 20s. I am not sure why, but even with the lowest settings, hitting 30 FPS in cutscenes is near impossible. I am happy that the main gameplay doesn't have these issues, but it is annoying to deal with.
So to answer the question of IF the game will run, I can happily say yes it will. I will definitely need more testing to bring out a full settings suite for Turbo and Performance modes (Silent mode won't be possible), but I am satisfied with what is possible!
Exoprimal is available now on Steam for $60 and is rated Playable for the Steam Deck due to showing non-Steam Deck controller icons and small in-game text. The latter of which is definitely true, so beware!
