I am pretty amazed at what the community can do sometimes, and as far as software goes, I have been quite impressed, but this is going a step further than I really ever expected. One of the community members is taking matters into their own hands and creating the Steam Deck controller that we have all been talking about.
The community member, who goes by the name Kamp (@KampCreates), posted on Twitter about feeling inspired and designing the controller in CAD, and it looks exactly like how we all would imagine. It's essentially both ends of the Steam deck gamepad but without the screen in the middle. I followed up and asked if this is going to be something they make, and they responded by saying they will:
I did send a DM to stay up to date on the project, and I asked about the possibility of adding other features like rumble or gyro. They mentioned that they are interested in adding rumble but would rather keep it simple for now and build upon it once everything is working. It may take some time for them to get this going since they are busy, but it is something they are looking forward to doing!
My initial idea of the perfect Steam Deck controller was putting the two ends of the Deck together. While I expanded on this idea in an opinion piece with more features I would like, I still would love a working controller for outside of Steam that has all the buttons the Deck gamepad does.
I am not sure how long this controller will take, and it doesn't sound like they do either, but it's an awesome idea, and I can't wait to see it realized. I am looking forward to updates from Kamp on the project and will be following it very closely.

There's a lot of empty, presumably junk space on that controller. Yeah, and definitely angle the grips, like others have mentioned.
Could is it possible to make it slant outwards towards the bottom like a normal controller? At the moment it seems a bit cramped and not very comfortable to hold as it's just a square with some grips on it.
Yeah I was thinking the same. The Steam Deck is comfy because the controls are spread wider apart so having them straight doesn't strain the wrists. For a conventional controller size tho it becomes necessary to add an outwards camber. Look at Joycons and their included grip for example.
I played Gameboy for hours, no complaints, ahhh, to have young hands again..
Please make it work over 5GHz wifi ! I want to remote play PC to TV but bluetooth won’t reach my PC.
