We've just received a whole bunch of new details for ATLUS' new JRPG 'Metaphor: ReFantazio', launching October 11, 2024.

Most of the details are regarding how the game will handle combat, including the game's "Fast & Squad" battle system, as well as Archetypes, and the party system. So let's dive a little deeper into the world of Metaphor: ReFantazio!

The game will use a battle system known as "Fast & Squad", which will allow players to fight in dungeons in a way that has not been possible in turn-based battles to date.

In Metaphor: ReFantazio, you will be able to switch between real-time actions that directly attack the enemy when navigating in the dungeon, which is known as "Fast", and the more traditional turn-based command battles you might be used to, known as "Squad".

The "Fast" system is a good way to fight low ranked enemies that you've already fought, as you can quickly defeat them without being locked into a turn-based battle.

Because of the "Fast" system, you will be able to use abilities like the lock-on function, dash, and evade even in the field.

Stronger enemies that you don't outrank cannot be defeat in the "Fast" mode, so you'll need to enter the turn-based "Squad" mode in order to fight them. However, you can attack an enemy in "Fast" mode to stun them and begin the Command battle with an advantage.

Command battles in Metaphor: ReFantazio can be fought in a party of up to four people. There can be more than 4 people in your party, however, so you'll need to make decisions on who you want to join you in the battle.

While fighting in turn-based mode usually involves selecting actions from multiple commands, in this game, commands can be selected with the touch of a button, allowing the battle to proceed at a faster pace.

During command battles, you can transform into awakened Archetypes, which I guess are similar to Personas(?). Each Archetype has its own special skills, and equipping Archetypes with skills that strike the enemy's weaknesses allows you to get the advantage in battle. But make sure your Archetype doesn't expose a weakness in you at the same time.

In Command Battles, you will also be able to determine the position of party members, so you should strategically place which row your fighters are on.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is intentionally made to have difficult battles, in order to emphasize the tension of deliberating and selecting commands to earn a great sense of accomplishment that comes with victory.

As you progress through the game, you will encounter both "main dungeons" and "side dungeons", main dungeons being there to progress the game's storyline, and side dungeons offer battles for side quests and other challenges.

Will you be able to take on the Giant Sandworm threatening the rural town of Martira? What about that rumor you heard in the local tavern about monsters in the area? You'll be able to find out later this year... Just make sure you complete your main quest before your deadline expires, because in Metaphor: ReFantazio you're always against the clock!

Metaphor: ReFantazio is due to launch on Steam on October 11th, 2024. The game will have full controller support but we don't know the system requirements just yet, so it's hard to say how the game might run on the Steam Deck.
