Time Crisis 5 is Fully Playable On The Steam Deck, And It's A Nostalgia Trip

I have fond memories of the good ol' days of arcades and the experiences I had there. While I didn't go often, the gorgeous action-packed splendor of Time Crisis always caught my attention. The game is filled with back-to-back arcade-style action, and you would use a lightgun, or fake gun model, to aim and shoot at enemies.

This was the coolest, so I was surprised to learn that Time Crisis 5, the current game in the series still in arcades, is a full-on PC game and can be played without issue on computers! And it got me thinking: Could it run on the Steam Deck? The answer is yes. Yes, it does work, runs extremely well, and is super cool to play this way. Is it as enjoyable as the arcade version with the lightgun? No, but it's an awesome way to feel nostalgic.

This was originally seen in a tweet reposted by Fan the Deck, which gave me the idea to test this.

We won't be providing a download link to Time Crisis 5 due to the game still being in circulation in arcades. We do not encourage or condone piracy, and this was tested for experimental purposes.

This game works so well because it is built using Unreal Engine 3, which has a native PC version. So, if you have the game, launch the Win64_shipping.exe, and use Proton Experimental, it will launch as a normal PC game with full keyboard and mouse support! And with Steam Input, we can map keys to the Deck's gamepad and play it with a controller! It runs extremely well, easily hitting 60 FPS and 16W and under battery drain.

The controls themselves aren't straightforward, but for this testing, I used a controller configuration that Deck Wizard created. This allows you to go into cover, shoot, and implement some gyro support. I am not sure how to swap guns yet, but for general playing, it does work! I would love to see if this could be set up with a lightgun and make a portable Time Crisis 5 station, and if someone does, it would be amazing to see.
