Not long ago, Rayman Legends Retold was announced, and I was extremely excited. I love Rayman, and it has been so long since we have seen a game in the franchise. I was lucky enough to have a chance to check the game out before its initial announcement, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to actually play the game. Now, thanks to Nintendo, I had the chance to check it out at Summer Game Fest, and I’m so glad I did.

Rayman Legends Retold

For those who don’t know, Rayman Legends Retold is a remake of the 2013 release, but with some huge changes. These include the massive graphical overhaul, new levels, new music, voice acting, and so much more. I had my worries that some of these changes, especially the visuals, could ruin some of what made Rayman Legends so iconic. However, playing through the demo convinced me that I don’t have much to worry about.

In my demo, I was able to play through three levels. The first was a remade level from the original, the second was one of the new dragon flying levels, and the third was a musical level. I was super excited to try out all of these, though the new levels interest me the most. But I enjoyed all of them, and was wonderfully impressed by how much it still felt like Rayman, despite the visual changes.

Both the remade levels and musical levels still gave me that same vibe the original did. The mechanics still feel sound and tight, the platforming is great, and at core, it still feels like Rayman. Honestly, it still feels as good as ever, which has made me miss the franchise even more. In a lot of ways, the new visuals enhance the experience with detail and lighting that is so pleasing on the eyes.

At the same time, the new visual style leaves behind some of the charm and vibrancy that the original has. With everything being more cartoonish, there was a lot more expression baked into the environments and world that has now been lost with the more realistic 3D art style. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it was one of those big parts of the series that has always stuck with me. Even with the original games before Legends, it didn’t chase realistic-looking visuals and lighting. I like the new style, but it loses some of the spark that hooked me in with the original style.

However, the new level was awesome. The one I tried came in the form of dragons from location to location as we travel across the world, and the one I played was a blast. We’re essentially on rails, moving across the screen as we follow a designated path, but there’s so much happening around to keep it interesting. We can dodge left and right, do barrel rolls to get away from incoming projectiles, fling fireballs at enemies around us, and the view can even shift from its 3D perspective to a 2D one. It’s a lot of fun, and I can’t wait for the other flying levels.

There are also new levels in a brand-new world, but I didn’t get the chance to try it out. Still, I’m very excited since more Rayman is never a bad thing.

I would also like to mention that its performance on the Nintendo Switch 2 held very strong. In handheld mode, it was running at 60 FPS with very decent-looking visual quality. I didn’t have enough time to look further and dissect it, but it looked great to me. This also votes well for its performance on the Steam Deck, and I expect it to be very playable at 60 FPS on the Deck.

I’m extremely excited for Rayman Legends Retold. Playing it at the Nintendo booth brought back so many wonderful memories, and reminded me about the great platforming, incredible soundtrack, and why I’ve wanted a new Rayman game for so long. The new visual style does its job, and it’s still great to look at, but the last charm is something I do feel a little sad about. Regardless, this is definitely a game I’m going to be picking up when it releases.
