No Man’s Sky is the game that keeps on giving. It is quite possibly the biggest turnaround story of all time, with the disappointing 2016 release feeling like a figment of the past. The game has had so many massive free updates that it has delivered everything it promised and significantly more without any extra cost. Now, their newest free update is here, and just like the others, it’s a massive one that seems to be preparing for the Steam Frame.

The Cosmos update is insane, but there are two specific improvements that seem to be pointing to support for the steam frame. Under the Rendering tab in the patch notes, we have mentioned for added support for Foveated Rendering for PC VR. This is a rendering technology that saves on performance by tracking where your eye is looking and rendering the image in full detail while lowering the image quality in the peripheral vision. This allows us to see a clear image in front of us, making it appear more detailed while saving on performance.
- Added support for foveated rendering on PCVR.
- Utilising eye-tracking technology, foveated rendering concentrates rendering resources at the centre of your vision, sharpening and beautifying the details you focus on.
Now, there are a few headsets that already utilize this tech, but the upcoming Steam Frame has been talked about with it a lot. It also seems to coincide with another leak of the reservation system, so it seems very possible that the game is getting itself ready for the very soon release of the Steam Frame.
However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg with this massive update. In Cosmos, you can now become the director of a space station, join galactic alliances, construct space bases on asteroids and your own space station, strip, colossal, shipwrecks, utilize a new star system map, investigate, infested, outpost, and even reach the highly lethal sun in each system. There is so much more with this update, and it’s crazy that it’s all completely free. As long as you own the game, there’s no additional cost.
And yes, it’s quite playable on the steam deck. I wouldn’t expect anything above 30 FPS if you want the game to look decent, but it is definitely playable on the go. It’s a no-brainer as well, considering it just keeps getting better and better.

No Man's Sky is on sale for $23.99 until September 21st and is rated Steam Deck Verified.
