Last year, I had the pleasure of checking out King of Meat at Gamescom, and I was blown away by it. Making a co-op dungeon crawler that's masked as a game show where the dungeons can be user-created. It was a lot of fun to play, having a nice mix of goofy and vibrant to keep it intriguing to look at. At Summer Game Fest, I got to try the game again, checking out the dungeon-building tools that everyone will be able to use, and it is pretty amazing.

King of Meat

The amount of creativity and options people will have is pretty in-depth, and it makes sense. The game is developed by Glowmade, which was co-founded by Jonny Hopper, an ex-developer on the Little Big Planet (LBP) series. Those games are known for their emphasis on great tools for players to create these incredible levels filled with creativity, thanks to how open-ended the tools are. After learning this, it makes sense why King of Meat has a very similar system inside.

The creation system is extremely easy to use and maneuver. You start out by adding rooms that connect to each other, and you have a choice of which rooms to place and where. From there, you can go into each room and decorate it, place traps, enemies, and more. There's so much flexibility with what you can place and where that each dungeon can have its own feel to it, and I love it.

But what makes it so much more malleable, and reminds me of the good ol' LBP days, is the Logic system. Here, you can make different objects interact with each other and with the players in different, unique ways. It can vary from how doors are unlocked or enemy encounters are triggered, to making smaller minigames within the dungeon like Simon Says. It's pretty amazing seeing what the system can do, and it's all extremely easy to digest, understand, and utilize.

On top of that, it's just a joy to play on the Steam Deck. While at Summer Game Fest, the team brought their own Steam Deck for me to try the game on, and while it had some performance issues, it was running above 30 FPS and looking great. Afterwards, I was able to try the game at home on my own Steam Deck with an updated build, and it was running significantly better. It stuck above 40 FPS with the default settings, whether I was in dungeons or building my own, and it truly was a joy.

I am not surprised it is running well, seeing as how the game will be released on the Nintendo Switch, but the team expressed their desire to get it running well on the Deck, so I am happy. It's great seeing a game like this running so well on the go, and I can see it being a go-to party game to play wth friends. It was awesome running through dungeons in the palm of my hands, diving past traps, fighting groups of skeletons, and solving puzzles.

Every part of the game is also very accessible with a controller, making it great to play through on the Deck. Even the dungeon customization was super easy to control, and that's usually a mode that is not super controller-friendly. It makes me wish I had more creativity in me, because I will never be able to make the amazing, complicated levels that others can and will.

I don't think it's insane to say that King of Meat is looking to be the Little Big Planet of dungeon crawlers. It has a wacky, vibrant atmosphere, a fantastic game show-like feel, addicting co-op gameplay, and a great creator mode that will help keep the game alive. I love what I have tried and seen so far, and I can't wait for the game to be released so I can start seeing what other amazing people will create, especially since I don't have the creativity to do it myself.
