HELLDIVERS 2 Will Require PlayStation Account Linking Starting Next Week

Even though doesn't perform the best on the Steam Deck, HELLDIVERS 2 remains at the top of the most played games on the device since its release. Even if it isn't the greatest to run, the game is incredibly addicting and so much fun to play. It has also been relatively easy to get it up on Deck, which is great, though we will need to go through an extra step soon as a PlayStation account will soon be required.

In an update that was posted yesterday on Steam, Sony (the parent company of PlayStation) provided an update on account linking. According to them, there were technical issues at launch, which is why requiring a PlayStation Network account was optional. But, with those issues figured out, it will now start requiring players to link the accounts. Linking will begin being required on May 6th for new players, while current players will start to see a mandatory login starting May 30th and will be required to link to continue playing by June 4th.

While this shouldn't impact playability, it is an extra step that wasn't necessary before. I am not surprised that this is a step forward, considering they are going to start implementing PlayStation overlays into PC titles starting with Ghost of Tsushima, but I can understand the resistance coming from PC gamers. Ultimately, as a title that is published by PlayStation, it is their right to do it, but including other accounts to connect to play a game after it has been released and making it mandatory for existing players can feel blindsided.

I do actually like what PlayStation is doing with their account linking and overlay, and I am a big fan of the trophy system that PS uses, but requiring existing players to link their accounts is going to be a tough one to sell. I am not sure if the overlay will come to HELLDIVERS 2, but Playstation does mention that this will help keep players from griefing and abuse and upholding safety and security. I did look back in past updates and don't see any mention of account linking being temporarily optional, but I did see that it does mention a "PSN Account Required" at the bottom of the new Warbond updates.
