GOG Reiterates Support for Bringing its Galaxy Client to Linux

GOG has some staunch supporters out there, and you can't argue that the DRM-free nature of the platform is very appealing, but unfortunately, their GOG Galaxy client doesn't natively work on Linux right now. We reported at the beginning of the year that the company was hiring someone to bring their Galaxy client to Linux, and GamingOnLinux decided to check in with the GOG team to see if any progress has been made.

Here's what the joint-CEO, Krzysztof Papliński, had to say about future Linux support for the GOG Galaxy launcher:

"Linux continues to be one of the topics we hear the most about from our community, and we really appreciate the passion and patience of everyone who’s been asking about it.

Following the role we announced earlier this year, we now have the specialist on board and are actively exploring the best way to approach Linux support for GOG GALAXY. This is a significant undertaking, so while we’re not ready to share any specific plans, timelines, or results just yet, it’s very much an area we’re investing time and effort into.

We’re excited about the possibilities and will be happy to share more when the time is right!"

So the good news is that they did indeed find a person for the role they were hiring for, and they're still with GOG, meaning the team is still working towards bringing GOG Galaxy to Linux. Sadly, we don't get much more information than that, with no scheduled release date planned as of yet.

While apps like the Heroic Launcher can help us access our GOG libraries from Linux devices such as the Steam Deck, it would be great to have the official GOG launcher work natively on our devices. There are some games which are only available on GOG, especially plenty of old classics such as those covered in our Classics on Deck series, and having easier access to those can only be a good thing.
