Disgaea Mayhem was provided by NIS America for review. Thank you!

I am a sucker for games that require some form of grinding to constantly get more and more powerful. There are many games that do this across RPG and JRPG genres, but my favorite is the Disgaea series. It’s basically designed for grinding, with an extremely high level cap, ways to increase skill power, level-up items, and so much more. On top of that, the newest game in the franchise, Disgaea Mayhem, is almost here, changing up the usual turn-based tactical gameplay into a Dynasty Warriors-esque hack and slash experience. However, as much as I love the series, this is not a game you should play on the Steam Deck.

Disgaea Mayhem

I have had the pleasure of playing the game for review, and I am still working through it, but I can say this is not an experience worth playing on the Deck. Recently, the game got the Steam Deck Playable rating, which knocked it for its resolution and for having minor graphical issues. Since it still has a Playable status, he would think that the game is still relatively enjoyable and the issues it may have would not impede that. That’s how the rating should be, but that isn’t the case for Disgaea Mayhem.

The largest issue is the graphical problems it has. The rating mentions minor issues, but the issues aren’t anything but. There’s an insane amount of ghosting and artifacting that appear almost every 30 seconds, and it gets worse the more you move. This can happen in the hub or in the levels. For whatever reason, I didn’t see it happen much in the Item World, but that doesn’t change how frequently it occurred everywhere else.

On top of that, I test this on multiple different devices, both on my Decks and my Linux Mini PC, with multiple different Proton versions, including the default Proton 11, Proton GE 11-1, and Experimental’s bleeding-edge branch. All of them exhibited the same issues.

There’s no way that this should be rated Playable just based on this issue. It’s so poor that I actually had to stop playing the game multiple times just to readjust my eyes because it was so jarring. I wanted to play this game, and I wanted to play it on the Steam Deck, but the graphical issues are so bad that I just couldn’t bring myself to stomach it for long periods of time.

To make matters worse, performance is also on the poor side. This is not a game I would imagine needing tons of resources to run, especially because most of the levels, characters, and geometry of structures are pretty basic. However, there’s a weird bottleneck that stops this game from going above 45 FPS, and there are some minor stutters here and there. I could maybe understand a little bit more if that was the only issue, and we just had to set it to 30 FPS, but it just feels like the icing on the cake with the problems it already has. And yes, this happens even on the lowest graphical settings.

I’ll be giving my thoughts on the game in a review, which is coming soon, but this is a clear example of how Valve’s rating system can be incorrect and misleading. It’s great that Valve takes in user feedback, but the initial rating is still very important and will lead people to purchase this game, thinking it will at least be playable on the Deck. The rating is extremely misleading. In this case, and this is why it’s always good to look into performance and playability outside of the rating system.

Disgaea Mayhem can be wishlisted ahead of its July 23rd release.
