Even today, I am still shocked at how big Among Us has become. The small, multiplayer deduction game took the world by storm, and developer Innersloth is running with it in some very interesting ways. Recently, a full-on TV show was released, with some big names attached to it, but it looks like the team wants to branch out and see what other kinds of games they can make within the same universe. That is what has led to Among Us Story Story Story: On Guard.

Taking the foundation that came from the original game, On Guard gives us a chance to dive into a simulation where we need to become a detective and uncover who the impostor is that killed the ship’s cook. This was announced during the Summer Game Fest showcase, and I thought it looked ridiculous in all the right ways. And thanks to Nintendo, I had a chance to check it out for myself. And it is just as ridiculous as I thought.
The story starts off quick. We enter a simulation to train us on how to handle ourselves on the ship. Almost immediately, we come face-to-face with the body of our cook, and with us discovering the body first, lying dead on the ground, we are immediately blamed as the imposter and murdering them. In the demo, I got a little slice of what to expect from the full game. We have to run away from our crew accusing us, solve a puzzle, and read through a chunk of dialogue. Thankfully, the dialogue is interesting and hilarious, filled with puns and word choices that feel reminiscent of a detective from the 1920s.

A lot of the original mechanics from the game have been translated into this one as well. There are many games to complete, with some returning from the original game, like swiping our card to open doors, and some new ones, like making coffee to bring out the engineer and trap him for information. I’ve always loved little interactive, physics-based minigames, and it looks like this is going to be filled with them.
Unlike the original game, On Guard has a much bigger focus on story, and I’m liking it so far. We start off running away from our crewmates, then decide to investigate to clear our name. From there, we have to get to the medbay to find the body to check it out, and to do that, we have to lure our engineer and trap him until he tells us how to get there from the vents. And all of it is packed with hilarious dialog and ridiculous scenarios.

If the rest of the game continues having dialog like what I saw, it’s going to be wonderful. There were so many hilarious moments, with my favorite being the conversation that occurs while we are chasing the engineer around. It was so funny watching him run around, defending his emails and why they are great and shouldn’t be ignored. It was just one of a few ridiculous moments that stood out, so I expect the full game to be filled with a good chunk of them.
The change to the art style when in the simulation is a nice touch as well. It helps separate what’s the real world and what's not, but still has a lot of charm to it. The distinction from the new art style is great; it helps the game stand out.
It was a little weird seeing an Among Us game turned into a dialogue-heavy detective gay with a focus on its story, but from what I’ve played so far, Innersloth is doing something very cool here. The humor and style are both on point, and I’m curious what direction the story will take. I’m looking forward to uncovering who the impostor really is.

Among Us Story: On Guard will be available on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam, and you can wishlist it right now on Steam to prepare.
