Watch Out for Goblins!, the first game from Ottawa-based indie studio SQYD.studio, is a 3D physics-based platformer that promises a combination of mayhem and humor. The game is set to be released on PC via Steam in 2025 and encourages players to unleash their inner goblin, causing chaos and engaging in plenty of physics-based shenanigans!

The announcement trailer above shows off a whimsical, colorful world where players can expect to somersault through the air, navigate precarious landscapes, and collect Cogs to repair the realm of Gobland. The emphasis is on playful unpredictability, and it's an odd combination of motion capture animation and real-time physics. While the ragdoll-style physics mechanics are cute and all, they do raise the question of whether or not Watch Out for Goblins! can keep players' attention and interest after the novelty wears off. Time will tell!

What’s Inside the Goblin World?

Taking on the role of "Goblin Royalty," the game's tone is lighthearted and humorous, with absurd situations like racing while wearing loincloths and purposefully walking into glaring traps. In addition, it promotes a carefree and destructive attitude, where environments can be shattered and danger is constantly present.

Watch Out for Goblins! offers solo adventures but also introduces split-screen multiplayer, allowing two goblins to engage in cooperative antics or even minigames where they face off against each other. The tone of the game is playful, carefree, and all about having fun at someone else's expense, which is reflected in the concept of "Goblin Grabbers," where you can throw your friend off a cliff. What’s not to love about that? The multiplayer component is intriguing, but how well such chaotic gameplay is implemented is still up in the air.

Early Access and Demo Details

In 2025, Watch Out for Goblins! will be released in Early Access. This October 14th, 2024, during Steam Next Fest, a demo will be available for download. Having the opportunity to receive constructive criticism and polish the game's mechanics in Early Access before its full release is a huge perk, especially for a physics-based game like this one.

A Promising Start or a Goblin-Sized Gamble?

Those who enjoy games with a lot of randomness and silliness might enjoy this one because of its heavy use of physics-based humor and multiplayer mayhem. Whether SQYD.studio can strike the right balance remains to be seen, but it’s definitely a project worth keeping an eye on, especially for fans of indie games with a comedic twist.
