I have found myself getting more and more excited for Tekken 8's eventual release as the new character trailers keep coming out, but I have been worried about how it will perform on the Steam Deck. This is a cutting-edge Unreal Engine 5 game that looks phenomenal in terms of its models, backgrounds, and effects. Luckily, we are able to get a little test of what Tekken 8 will be like thanks to the demo finally releasing on Steam, and if its anything to go by, I have very good news.

After doing my testing, I can safely say that the demo runs wonderfully on the Steam Deck OLED. Without any caps, I was able to get a very smooth 60 FPS on the 3 stages available with a mix of medium and low settings with a 75% resolution scale. The default settings put everything at low and use 70%, which still looks great, but it can handle a bit higher quality in versus modes. The story mode's Chapter 1 did dip a little due to how busy the background was, but those dips wouldn't last long and go right back to 60.

With Tekken 8 being a very competitive fighting game, 60 FPS is essential. For general play, using Catmull-Rom Bicubic upscaling at 75 rendering scale and anti-aliasing, textures, and background quality at medium, with everything else at low, worked great for 1v1 fights and Arcade Quest. You might need to lower quality a bit more for the story mode, but I am pleased to say that outside of it, the game will run really great while looking quite good for the device it is on. The battery life during movies does go down to 7W - 8W, but in most fights, it will be around 21W - 22W battery drain or 12W - 14W when running around in Arcade Quest.

While the demo doesn't represent the final product, it is usually an older version of the game that lacks some optimization. With this in mind, we can expect performance to be a bit better overall when the game is fully released. With how well it plays already, I feel a lot more confident that Tekken 8 will be a great game on the Steam Deck.

Tekken 8 is currently available to pre-order ahead of its January 25th release on multiple different storefronts, including:
