There has been a lot happening across the world right now, and it looks like it is spilling into the handheld space. Recently, subreddits across Reddit have decided to block links to Twitter/X following a speech where Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter/X, made some controversial gestures that seem to resemble a Nazi salute. Now, it seems the Steam Deck subreddit is joining their fellow subreddits and banning direct links from Twitter/X as well.
After a post on the subreddit gained an incredible amount of traction asking if the sub would be banning links to X, the mod team got together and discussed whether they would join in, and ultimately decided to do so. This follows the decisions of other big subreddits like r/Antiwork, r/NBA, r/boardgames, and r/OnePiece.
In a post made by the head mod, Sweatycat, this decision was not reached lightly. There was discussion and studying to see how others were reacting to the initial post that sparked this, and in the end, the team decided to ban direct links. There weren't many direct links to Twitter/X in general, so it is a small change, and images of Twitter/X posts that are relevant to the Steam Deck are still allowed, as long as there is no traffic going to X directly.
Within 15 minutes, the post received over 650 upvotes, which does indicate a monumental amount of people supporting this change.
This shouldn't affect the subreddit's daily posts much due to the low amount of direct links to Twitter/X in general, but it is bound to be a controversial one. However, with so many on the subreddit expressing support for this ban, and a lot of other subreddits making the same decision, it makes sense why the team decided to make this decision.
