I was shocked by how many amazing games were released in 2023, and even more shocked when 2024 not only kept that trend going, but went even bigger. So far, it looks like 2025 is going to do just that with some amazing games slated for the beginning of the year. With the new year being so close, I wanted to take a moment to go through some of the bigger upcoming games and list them, as well as discuss how I think each one will run on the Steam Deck.
So, here are the notable releases for January and February of next year:
Notable Releases of January 2025:
Freedom Wars Remastered - January 9th
This is one I am personally so excited about. Originally released on the PS Vita in 2024, you have a 1 million-year prison sentence and must take on dangerous missions to fight massive creatures. The third-person combat and feel is reminiscent of God Eater or a faster-paced Monster Hunter. With this being a remaster of a PS Vita release, I can't see why this wouldn't be playable on the Steam Deck. There are cloud saves and controller support, and I could see this hitting 60 FPS.
Hyper Light Breaker - January 14th
The sequel to Hyper Light Drifter takes a different turn than the previous game, going with a fully realized 3D roguelike to explore procedurally generated landscapes and destroy hordes of foes alone or with friends. It's an awesome experience, and it should be relatively playable on the Steam Deck. We do have controller and cloud save support, but with it releasing in early access and being a bigger 3D world, I could see this sticking to 30 FPS.
Tales of Graces f Remastered - January 16th
The next remaster from Bandai Namco on this list is from one of my favorite real-time combat JRPG series. Originally released on the Wii in 2009 in Japan and localized for English in 2012, you will be able to experience the full story and the Lineage and Legacies after the story. It also has new quality-of-life features, like auto-saves and turning off enemy encounters in fields and dungeons. The requirements for the game are quite minimal, so there should be no problems at all playing this on the Steam Deck. There is both cloud saves and controller support.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins - January 16th
Dynasty Warriors is one of my guilty pleasure series, where I can just mindlessly slaughter thousands of enemies on a huge battlefield, and I love it. This entry changes things up a bit, following one person instead of choosing between 60-70 different people. It still retains the original mechanics, though, and I love it. We tested the demo on the Steam Deck and found it playable. The requirements are a little high, but it does perform. It also has cloud saves, controller support, and HDR capabilities.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - January 23rd
It took some time, but the sequel to Final Fantasy 7 Remake is finally coming to PC! It's great to finally continue the story on the PC, and for more powerful computers, this looks like the best way to play. However, the requirements are a bit high on the Steam Deck. Square Enix has specifically said they are optimizing for the Deck, so I do hope it will be playable on the go. The game will have cloud saves, controller support, and HDR capabilities.
Synduality Echo of Ada - January 23rd
A new UP from Bandai Namco, Synduality, is a PvPvE extraction shooter where you will go into an arena and gather as many resources as possible while surviving against enemies and other players. It's an intriguing concept I enjoyed when I tried the closed network test. It was also hard to run on the Steam Deck, but it was playable. It's tough to call, but I want to remain at least slightly optimistic. It does have controller and cloud save support.
Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. - January 27th
This was one of my favorite 2D fighters growing up, and seeing it make a return like this makes me so happy to see it coming to PC. I tried out the open beta that was available before, and it runs like a charm on the Steam Deck. I can see this being one of the best fighters to play on the go. It has controller support, but no cloud saves.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - January 30th
The sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man is also coming to PC, and it looks like it will be a really hard one to run. Usually, I would just say there's no way we can play this on the Deck, but Nixxes Software is optimizing and porting it, which gives me a lot of hope. There's no word on requirements yet, but I believe this will be playable at 30 FPS. It will have full controller support, but it doesn't mention if there will be cloud saves yet.
Sniper Elite: Resistance - January 30th
The next entry in the Sniper Elite franchise doesn't do much to change from the normal framework and formula for which the series is known, but that makes it even better! The new entry is awesome, but it does seem like it may not run super well on the Steam Deck. Based on the requirements, the team is asking for a minimum RTX 2060 GPU, which is too much for the Deck to handle effectively. I hope there will be optimizations as it gets closer to release, but it may be wishful thinking.
Notable Releases of February 2025
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - February 4th
The sequel to the critically acclaimed medieval RPG Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the first big game to release in February, and from what I have played so far, it will be a fantastic experience. I recently wrote an article about how I am optimistic regarding Steam Deck playability after seeing the system requirements, and I stand by that assessment! Currently, the game has controller support but nothing regarding cloud saves. However, the first game has cloud saves, so I would be surprised if this entry didn't.
Sid Meier's Civilization 7 - February 11th
This is probably my most anticipated game for the beginning of next year. There are a lot of amazing titles on this list, but I love the Civilization games, and I like how they push the formula forward with this entry and how you change civilizations/rulers based on what age the game is in. Based on the system requirements, it should run on the Steam Deck and be relatively enjoyable due to the controller support. HDR support is included, but no word on cloud saves yet.
Assassin's Creed Shadows - February 14th
Ever since they announced this release on Steam on release day, I have been extremely excited about this entry in the Assassin's Creed series. Feudal Japan is a location I have wanted the team to cover, and although it took some time, it truly looks magical so far. However, I do worry about it being Steam Deck playable. Both Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws are Ubisoft's two newest huge releases, and both have forced ray tracing and don't run well on the Deck. I hope Assassin's Creed Shadows doesn't fall into this category, too, but I worry.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak 2 - February 14th
The Legend of Heroes series is my other favorite JRPG series, and this entry continues the latest game's storyline. The way the series intertwines all characters and events from the entire series is amazing, and I can't wait for Daybreak 2. With how well Daybreak ran, I see no reason this entry wouldn't be awesome on the Steam Deck. It already shows controller support, but nothing for cloud saves yet. I figure this will be updated closer to the release.
Lost Records: Bloom & Rage - February 18th
DONT'NOD, the creators of Life is Strange, seems to be returning to these roots with a new IP that invokes the feeling of their previous game. The game follows a group of girls who experienced a traumatic event in 1995 and have to face what happened 27 years later. There are no system requirements listed yet, but most of DON'T NOD's titles run quite well on the Steam Deck, so I am hopeful.
Avowed - February 18th
Obsidian is returning to the first-person RPG world, which looks amazing. Avowed takes place in a fantasy world where you will explore, find secrets, and use a combination of magic, guns, swords, and more to take down the enemies in front of you. It asks for some high requirements, but they aren't too high to the point where they may not be playable. With upscaling, this may end up being playable, but nothing hasn't been announced just yet.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii - February 20th
If any studio knows how to continually create some of the most dramatic, engaging, and hilarious stories, it would be RGG with their Like a Dragon/Yakuza series. With their newest entry, they are going into pirate territory, which looks phenomenal. The requirements aren't public yet, but RGG and SEGA have been making sure their games run on the Steam Deck. I would say this is most likely a safe bet.
Monster Hunter Wilds - February 27th
The newest entry in the Monster Hunter series is easily one of the best. They are opening up the world and streamlining quests to make playing much easier and enjoyable. Every chance I have had to try it, I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with it. However, it most likely won't be very playable on the Steam Deck. The open beta was very hard to run, and while it is just a beta, the system requirements are high too.
Other Releases To Look Out For:
Tails of Iron 2: Whiskers of Winter - 1/28
Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap - 1/28
The Stone of Madness - 1/28
Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector - 1/31
Rift of the NecroDancer - 2/5
Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered - 2/14
