Recently, Capcom has been taking a hard stance against modding their games, claiming it is a form of cheating. Now, it seems Capcom is going on the offensive with its anti-modding sentiment and adding a new DRM protection to some of its games called The Enigma Protector. It seems to break modding and Cheat Engine and game compatibility on some Steam Deck models.

RE4 Capcom Breaking Modding and Steam Deck Support
I will miss this

The Enigma Protector is a software protection system developed to make specific software resistant to being cracked. It appears Capcom is now starting to utilize this software to stop their games from being modded. While this feels like a step backward, especially when modding can prolong the lifespan of a game and encourage sales because of the community, reports are coming in that this also breaks compatibility for some games on some Steam Decks.

Currently, the games we know of that have this added are Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. This was also implemented in Resident Evil Revelations, but there were some issues, and Capcom took out the update temporarily. Many people online say this is breaking compatibility with the Steam Deck completely, but this is also not entirely true.

There have been multiple reports of users not being able to run some of the games being affected by this DRM. I have seen the majority of them about the Mega Man Zero collection, like these recent Steam reviews:

And there was a review for Mega Man Battle Network Vol. 2 that was warning people not to buy games from Capcom due to the possibility of them breaking from The Enigma Protector DRM:

Seeing these reports, I went to try the games for myself. Each one could boot for me, and I played it without issues. Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection does have a broken main menu background, but forcing Proton GE as the compatibility layer fixes this. I tested this on my limited edition Steam Deck OLED, which may be one of the unaffected models, but I could play. There are other reports of players still being able to play these games, so I know I am not alone. I don't see any pattern either as to which models can play and which don't, so it may be more like a roulette for right now.

With this in mind, I would be cautious when purchasing Capcom games with the Steam Deck. If you are a huge fan willing to take a risk to play on your Deck, go for it. The games were running for me, and I didn't have issues, but there is a possibility the game may not work or stop working as Capcom rolls out this new DRM.
