One of my favorite features of the Nintendo Switch is being able to save a 30-second clip of what just happened. Saving epic moments I didn't anticipate in video form is extremely cool, and I am so glad it's there. I feel the same way about Deck Recorder, the plugin that can be installed on the Steam Deck. This has the same feature as the Nintendo Switch, allowing you to record footage independently. It's awesome and one of the few native features I want Valve to implement into the Deck. And with some news today, it seems this is on its way!
According to a post on Twitter/X from Pavel Djundik, the creator of SteamDB, Valve is working on a clip recording feature to be integrated into Steam! This feature would support background recording and timeline markers for supported games with special events, and it can be shared similarly to screenshots.
This hasn't been formally announced, so take it with a grain of salt, but Pavel is a data miner and runs SteamDB, which gathers a ton of data related to Steam and everything on it. So, while this is still a rumor, and nothing is confirmed, I do think it is worth entertaining.
I do hope this feature makes its way to Steam soon, though. I love the idea of easily recording clips directly in the client. I am unsure if this will make recording for long periods viable, but if anything is possible, I would love to see it! Valve continues to add new and incredible features to Steam, making it very hard to use any other storefront. I was already blown away by the addition of the Steam Workshop, which adds easy ways to host and add mods to your games, so bringing videos like this would be awesome, especially on the Steam Deck.
