Gamescom has been an incredible event, and the tone for my entire time there started off strong with my first appointment. I started at SEGA to check out the newest entry in the Two Point franchise, and I was elated to find out it was a hands-on experience. I wasn’t sure where the business management series would go next, but from what I’ve played, I’m happy to say they are moving in the right direction.
Two Point Museum brings us to…well, a museum setting. You will be setting up exhibits and decorating, hiring staff to take care of your building, and trying to make it as profitable as possible. It’s got all the necessities that a business management game like this should have, with the unique Two Point aesthetic that they have cultivated over their previous titles. Still, for multiple different reasons, I found myself enjoying the slice of Museum than their previous work.
One of my favorite new features of this game is how you get the exhibits. You use some of your hired staff to send on expeditions to different locations, and they will bring back new items to display. These can range from old artifacts to full-on dinosaur bones, which can be upgraded with more parts to garner more attention and bring more guests to your museum. Each expedition has random events that can be triggered that range from positive to negative effects. More positive effects can occur when you go with a higher-level team, and you can level them up the more expeditions you go on. With that, and the different locations you can go to, I found myself enjoying the more I played around with it.
The exhibits all have different themes, as well, encouraging you to place similar items near each other to help them gain more “fame” and attract customers. It’s another great way to get more people in your building and make more money. You can unlock and place other areas as well, like restrooms and gift shops, but the bulk of your time will be spent managing the show floor.
Speaking of making money, there are multiple ways to profit. The obvious ones are selling tickets, putting in more exhibits, making sure they are compatible, and decorating them accordingly, which will bring more people in. On top of that, museums are educational, so you also need to set up info stands to provide the information that guests want to see. This combined will bring in more people, which means selling more tickets. You can also change ticket prices and play around with how much you’re able to charge and get away with, and I was able to increase my ticket price from 55 to 90 without guests feeling like they were getting ripped off, so I felt quite successful.
You can also set up donation boxes to earn extra money, and the better your exhibits are, the more donations you will receive. There are also gift shops to sell extra merchandise, and you can customize their layout for effective selling.
And on top of that, Steam Deck support is something the team is looking into! The game is being released with controller support, and when I asked the team about playing on the Steam Deck, they mentioned that it is something they are interested in, so I feel very optimistic that the game will be supported on Deck.
I love the management gameplay loop of spending money to make more money and optimizing my space to maximize profits, and I can see myself really getting into it with Two Point Museum. It has the same defining charm as the series, but it brings their take on management to a new business to conquer, and I am so ready to create the best museum around.
Two Point Museum can now be wishlisted on Steam.
